Artists and designers have often turned to prose or poetry to inspire their work. Sometimes just a list of words will do. In the late 1960s, artist Richard Serra compiled a list of verbs (“Verb List Compilation: Actions to Relate to Oneself”) to inspire his work. He settled on “splash,” and tossed molten lead in a basement space owned by the Castelli Gallery in New York. ...
